Dear Dr Elizabeth,
Excellent work! Very well written, with useful and important information, well based on his vast knowledge and clinical experience.
Thanks and congratulations!
“A person that has lost their sense of smell (Anosmia), may have had no sense of smell since birth. Or the loss could have came on gradually with such an illness as parkinsons, or suddenly, perhaps the person has had a traumatic brain injury”.
I do not know if you got to read about the Brazilian medical doctor, Marc Abreu, who is developing a method for reversing degenerative diseases in the USA (https://newsbeezer.com/brazileng/the-brazilian-doctor-is-developing -a-method-for-reversing-degenerative-diseases-in-the-usa/); it seems that according to several of his patients it may be an interesting and promising treatment. A Journalist of the Brazilian R 7 TV Channel had embarked on this treatment until the first application was completed; his team filmed and, if you deem it interesting, you can watch it clicking in the above link.
“For whatever reason the loss of smell for some can be extremely difficult to live with. A whole emotional journey that you would never really think of can be difficult for a person in everyday existence. For example living life as a family, that simple chocolate cookies baking in the oven, the wonderful aroma that is floating around the kitchen, have a taste says Mum, loss of sense of smell affects the way food tastes. But they taste it anyway. Oh yum yum!!”.
My anosmia is not total, I smell coffee as I pass it, bread when it's still warm, I hate the smell of cigarette ashes when I clean the ashtray, I smell strong perfume flowers, I love and smell the " Lady of the Night" (I think it's night jasmine in English), but not many others that were part of my pleasure.
My taste buds are still very good.
“The emotional journey goes on, the alteration in taste can lead to malnutrition. Other problems in the kitchen through lack of smell can be highlighted if we didn't set a timer certainly did not smell it burning — food safety. Whilst we are talking about safety, home safety needs to be highlighted. Alarms should always be fitted, especially for gas”.
The smell of smoke? I can feel only if forewarned, going closer to its font. I've already left a pot of beans heating up, a man asked me what that smell was... I turned off the fire, but I lost the beans; again the same thing with rice: Julieta, who was far away, asked me what the smell of burning stuff was... the rice; was "bispado"*, but I like it that way...
“On speaking with someone with a loss of sense of smell I was made aware that some folks adapt less well than others in the long term. There are a proportion of people with the loss of the sense of hope that it will return, some accept it, others find that balance”.
Maybe a torture session on Dr Marc Abreu's apparatus can restore my sense of smell as I was young... lol.
Double congratulations, Dr Elizabeth, and thank you so much for following: it's an honour for me.
* It is said of food that is glued in the bottom of the pan and got a burnt taste.
